Striker Problem Solved? Wenger Says Arsenal Have Already Signed Their ‘Luis Suarez’

With little time left in the market, Arsenal fans are growing frustrated at the clubs lack of activity, particularly when it comes to signing attacking players. The club are looking to add but Wenger’s latest comments could indicate that he will stick with what he’s got rather than look for external solutions.

Speaking before Saturday evenings game against Leicester City where Alexis is expected to spearhead Arsenal’s attack, Wenger said: “I think it is worth it to try (Alexis at ST) as he has the quality to go behind.”

Although it didn’t work well against Liverpool, Alexis does appear to have the attributes of a good striker and he has shown that for Chile previously, albeit in a two striker formation. Wenger continued: ‘He has similar qualities (to Luis Suarez) It is interesting to see how well he copes. He is technically top.’

A big claim from Arsene, but a true one  – to an extent. Alexis is of a similar build to Suarez, what he lacks is that killer instinct you can only develop when playing as a striker consistently. He needs to play regularly and gain confidence in a central role if he is to succeed there. Many will question his lack of height, but Alexis can hold his own in the air and some of the best strikers in the world, Suarez and Sergio Aguero for example, do not have much in terms of height to offer. In a match where Arsenal may require more of a target, they will be able to put Olivier Giroud through the middle, potentially alongside Alexis.

I think Alexis will look better as a number 9 when more established, top quality midfielders are in support of him. Last week we saw an unfit Aaron Ramsey, out of shape Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi behind Alexis – not the best trio by any means. Mesut Ozil will return soon and so often we have seen the two record Arsenal signings link up brilliantly, perhaps as a number 10 and number 9 that duo could be the most influential when both are in central areas?

The immediate reaction from some fans may be that Alexis struggled against Liverpool up front, but he had several bad games playing as a winger last season. He just needs to get into a rhythm and I think he is more than capable of doing that up top. He is probably the most deadly finisher in the Arsenal squad right now.

The Chilean’s work ethic means that Arsenal can apply pressure from the front and force mistakes from oppponents defenders, we saw this in spells against Liverpool and I think if this were to be well-drilled and practicsed, it could give Arsenal an alternative attacking identity.

Report suggests Wolfsburg set to accept Arsenal offer for Draxler

Wolfsburg's Julian Draxler has been a long-term target for Arsenal

Julian Draxler in action for Germany

Italian media outlet TuttoMercatoWeb claim that Arsenal have made a bid of £41.9 million for Wolfsburg winger Julian Draxler, with theBundesliga outfit reportedly ready to accept the offer.

The Gunners' transfer business has once again be ponderous throughout the summer, with the club's obvious need for a forward and a central defender failing to be addressed as yet.

Arsene Wenger has found himself the target of heavy criticism from Arsenal fans for his reluctance to spend, and the atmosphere at the Emirates became toxic after the Gunners' 4-3 home loss to Liverpool on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

 Julian Draxler

TuttoMercatoWeb go on to report that Draxler is keen on a move to the Emirates, although there has been no official confirmation of any bid from any representatives from the North London outfit.

While a centre-back is probably the area that requires the most urgent attention at Arsenal, a versatile attacker who can play anywhere along the front line will certainly boost their chances of challenging for the title, especially someone of Draxler's quality.

Arsene Wenger is a long-term admirer of Julian Draxler

The 22-year-old has a similar frame to that of a young Robin van Persie, who arrived at Arsenal as a winger. Should a move for Draxler come to fruition, could Wenger have a Van Persie-like striker transformation in mind for the German?

Arsenal Rumour Mill: Done Deal, Injury Update, £30m Bid Tabled for 27-year-old forward

Deal Completed: Arsene Wenger Favourite Defender Agreed Roma Move

According to the reports from Gazzetta Dello Sport, Arsenal transfer target Bruno Peres who has appeared on Wenger’s radar after the injury crisis has reportedly undergone a medical on Tuesday in Italy, and his move was officially announced by Serie A giants AS Roma.

Arsenal defensive duo Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacker have been both ruled out from the start of the 2016/17 campaign and the Gunners are currently depended on Callum chambers and summer signing Rob Holding.

“AS Roma can confirm that the club has completed the signing of Bruno Peres from Torino FC,” read a statement from Roma.

“The agreement with Torino for the defender is for an initial €1 million loan, with an obligation to make the transfer permanent – depending on the completion of certain performance targets – for a fee of €12.5m.

“The transfer deal includes clauses for an additional bonus payment, up to a maximum of €1.5m, if the club and the player reach certain sporting objectives.”

The 26-year-old centre-back has been also identified as a transfer target for Arsenal rivals Manchester United after missing out of sigingin John stone. Brazilian star ha been also being compared to the Reds former player Nemanja Vidic.

Arsene Wenger finally opens up about Arsenal's search for a new striker

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he will sign a new striker if he finds the right player but admits that it is not easy to find offensive players during the summer transfer window.

The Gunners made attempts to sign Jamie Vardy and Alexandre Lacazette so far this summer but in both cases they have failed to lure them to the Emirates.

They face Leicester City later on today with Theo Walcott again expected to lead the offensive department for Wenger's team.

"I believe a club like ours is focused on giving chances to the players we develop in our own club," he told

"We have a few strikers who have a chance, if we find the right players we buy. But if you ask people 'give me names', you see that it is not that easy - look at a club like Real Madrid, who have they bought? Up front, it is very difficult.

"It is an important season for Theo [Walcott], because last year he had a difficult period.

"He can play as a striker and his numbers are excellent when he plays up front, we have [Olivier] Giroud, Alexis [Sanchez], Walcott, [Chuba] Akpom and [Yaya] Sanogo who is still here but is injured at the moment - the players we buy have to be better.

"Alexis and Walcott have pace, our game is linked with the speed of passing and the speed of movement and you need two."

Why luck could be on Arsenal’s side ahead of their trip to Leicester

There is no disputing the miracle that was the 2015/2016 season for Leicester City. Storming to the Premier League title against the odds, everyone said they couldn’t do it. Everyone expected them to fall apart against the big teams, but they didn’t… Apart from against Arsenal.

The Foxes lost on just three occasions last season, two of which were against the Gooners, and their only defeat at the King Power was at the hands of Arsene Wenger and his side. The reigning champions will be desperate to ensure that their first home game of the season is one to remember for all of the right reasons and will not want any kind of repeat of those results from last season.

However, the omens definitely favour the men in red and white, who have never lost at the King Power. Having secured two draws and last season’s 5-2 victory in their three trips to the stadium since it opened in 2002. After last weekend’s disappointing start to their title defence, Claudio Ranieri will want to go back to basics and ensure that his side do not concede as they did twice at Hull City last weekend.

In fact, Leicester City have not beaten Arsenal since November 1994, almost 22 years, a run featuring 19 different Premier League matches. What’s more, that 1994 victory was the first time the Foxes beat the Gunners since 1983. Talk about a bogey team…

A key man for the Gunners will be Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez. The striker loves playing at the King Power Stadium and has scored four goals across his two visits to the ground, making it one of his favourite stomping grounds since arriving at the Emirates from Barcelona.

Arsene Wenger will have to make sure that Sanchez is not isolated as he was in last week’s defeat toLiverpool, where the Chilean was deployed centrally with Olivier Giroud not fit enough to start. Sanchez was left alone up front and became frustrated with the Gunners resorting to long balls forward to bypass Jurgen Klopp’s high pressing game as Sanchez was dominated by two large central defenders, much like he will be by Robert Huth and Wes Morgan unless Arsenal favour a different style in their clash with the reigning champions.

Defeat for the Foxes on Saturday would be the first time that Claudio Ranieri has overseen back to back defeats since taking charge, with that last run to happen under Nigel Pearson in February 2015. Whilst it may seem inevitable to happen at some point this season with the increased number of fixtures due to Champions League participation, it would be a devastating start to the club’s title defence.

If the Foxes are to prove the omens wrong, they will have to overcome a strong Arsenal side who are expected to welcome back their key men including Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud. They will still have defensive vulnerabilities though, with Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertersacker both out injured and Rob Holding and Calum Chambers starting as the central defensive pairing last weekend, a prospect that Jamie Vardy will be licking his lips at.

Olympic Athlete Collapses After Pooing On Himself

A French athlete collapsed during the 50km walk after suffering from stomach trouble – only to get back to his feet and finish the race. Yohann Diniz, the world record holder in the event, was leading the field in the 45th minute when a camera picked up on him beginning to struggle.

A dark liquid starting trickling down the back of Diniz’s legs after he apparently defecated during the race. An hour or so later he collapsed to the floor, lying there motionless for a few seconds before dragging himself to his feet and soldiering on.

It had been reported by French publication L’Équipe that race favourite Diniz had been suffering from a bad stomach in the lead up to the event. Shortly afterwards, and with more than a minute’s lead, the athlete collapsed by the roadside, allowing others to pass.

In a moment of solidarity, the man going in to the lead, Canada’s Evan Dunfee, picked up the fallen athlete back to his feet as they continued with the race.

Despite the Frenchman’s best efforts, he finished outside the medal positions, eventually finishing in eighth place.

New Militant Group Surfaces, Bombs Oil Facilities In Delta State

Following the growing u nrest in the Niger Delta region, a new militant group has arisen and indicated its emergence with the destruction of oil facilities in the region.

A new Niger Delta militant group, Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate have been suspected to be behind the recent bombing of  oil facilities belonging to the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company at Owhrode community, Udu Local Government Area of Delta State.

According to The Punch, the incident occurred at about 2am on Friday morning barely two weeks after a new militant group had threatened to blow up oil facilities in the region.

The attack happened on a day multi-ethnic stakeholders’ meeting was held at the PTI Conference Centre Effurun, to finding ways to halt attacks on oil facilities held about ten kilometres away from the venue of the meeting which was attended by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
Local community sources confirmed the development, saying about two pipelines operated by NPDC were affected in the incident. Both gas and crude oil pipelines were affected, our sources added.

A military source, who spoke on a condition of anonymity, confirmed the attack, adding that the vandals used dynamites and other ammunitions to blow up the pipelines.

The Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate said it was waging war against oil facilities in the upland area of the region over the under development of the area but it has not openly claimed responsibility for the Friday’s attack.

“The gas pipeline is the only oil facility in our area that has no surveillance workers; so I want to appealed to the management of NPDC to engage members of the host communities in securing the facility”, he added.

Arsenal linked with Two centre-backs amist injury crisis

Following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel, Arsenal have been linked with a move forValencia’s Shkodran Mustafi and are still hopefully of getting a deal over the line.

However, as all Arsenal fans know, transfer deals don’t always get over the line and as such, it looks like the club have identified two players in case the move for the German international collapses.

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal have both Omer Toprak of Bayer Leverkusen and Simon Kjaer of Fenerbahce on their ‘Plan B’ list.

Atsushi Tomura/Getty Images Sport

Both players are 27-years-old and both are full internationals, having represented Turkey and Denmark, respectively

Arsene Wenger was forced to select Rob Holding and Calum Chambers at the heart of his defence against Liverpool, and while the pair did not do too much wrong, the fact is that such a duo is probably not strong enough for a team with title ambitions, so it’s clear that Arsenal need to get another defender into the club as soon as possible.

Arsenal Handed Massive Boost In Signing £60M Rated Striker

There is no doubt Arsenal are in dire need of a striker and also a defender to help strengthen the team this season.

Arsene Wenger has revealed he is still very much in the transfer window after Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool which ended 3-4.

“I’ve said many times before we are working very hard still to get one or two more players in,” said wenger

According to reports from the Daily Mail citing source from Canal + claims Arsenal have been handed a massive boost in signing one of Wenger’s long term admirer Alexandre Lacazette.

The Gunners have seen a £29.3m bid rejected for the 25-year old last month and could make another attempt after the Frenchman indicated that he will accept a big-money move to the Premier League.

Lacazette told Canal +: “If offers come in that one cannot refuse, I don’t want to refuse them.

“If not, I am happy at Lyon.”

The Daily Star reports Arsenal are preparing an improved offer for the £60million Frenchman before the end of the transfer window.

Arsenal Trending Today: Henry advise for Wenger, Striker linked with exit, Laczette speaks out

Thierry Henry reveals why Arsene Wenger must bolster backline

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has suggested that it has been clear all summer that Gunners are in need of a new centre-back.

The Gunners have been strongly linked with a bid to bring a new centre-half to The Emirates in recent days after Gabriel Paulista joined Per Mertesacker on the sidelines due to injury ahead of Arsenal’s opener against Liverpool.

Arsenal are believed be instantly searching for defensive reinforcements as the summer transfer window approaches its conclusion.

However, former North London captain Henry says that it was obvious that Arsenal were desperate to sign a cover at the back even before their latest injury mess.

Henry in his column for The Sun said: “Even before the injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel, it was clear that Arsenal needed to sign another centre-half.”

Gunners have not gained the Premier League crown since their brilliant unbeaten success when Henry was still operating at Highbury back in 2003-04.

Euro giants line up audacious move for £130,000-a-week Arsenal wing wizard Sanchez

Italian giants Inter Milan have been linked with a huge move for Arsenal and Chile attacker Alexis Sanchez.

Serie, A champions Juventus, are believed to have tried their luck signing Sanchez after selling Alvaro Morata, and now Don Balon suggests that Inter will be next to attempt their luck.

Inter have seen their player striker linked with an exit in Mauro Icardi, with Arsenal said to be interested in the South American.

New Inter manager Frank de Boer has reportedly told the team that he needs to use money from their Chinese investment to land Sanchez to the San Siro, and they are weighing up a £69million offer according to reports.

The ex-Barcelona star’s future is uncertain as he entered into the las two years of his deal without a solution for a new contract in a horizon.

The South American winger Sanchez had a difficult second campaign after getting an injury midway through the season, however, has still 42 goals in 93 games for Arsenal

When the head coach Arsene Wenger was asked for an update on the discussions between Gunners and stars Özil and Sanchez, the Frenchman declared there was no cause for doubts.

“We keep that internal We make progress always, but it is not always a quick process. They still have two years [left on their] contracts, and there is no urgency as well.” – he told Sky Sports,

“They (Arsenal fans) have no reason to be concerned. At the moment we have priorities, and most of the time contract extensions are done outside the transfer window because it gives you a bit more time and focus on that.” – Wenger added.

Arsenal €35 transfer target proven goalscorer Lacazette finally breaks the silence

Arsenal long-term target Alexandre Lacazette has claimed that he would leave The French giants Lyon this month if the French side takes an adequate offer from the top team.

On Sunday, Lacazette proved just why he is in demand by scoring a hat trick in his club’s 3-0 triumph over Nancy on the first weekend of the new Ligue 1 campaign.

A few weeks ago Lyon published a statement to claim that they had turned down Arsenal’s offer of €35 million for the French striker.

Talking after Lyon’s victory, Lacazette said French press suggests which had declared that he would be ready to leave Lyon.

“If there are offers that can’t be refused, I’d like not to refuse them,”

“But I’m very comfortable at Lyon. The proof was there today that I was in the right state of mind. I scored three goals I’m pleased. With my teammates, everything is going well. So for me all is well.” – Lacazette told French TV show Canal Football Club.

When quizzed if there were any proposals on the table, Lacazette smiled and told the journalist to “ask the president.”

Inter Milan Ready to Offer €80m for Arsenal Superstar

According to the Italian sources, Inter Milan new manager Frank De Boer is keen on offensive reinforcements and planning audacious move for Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez.

Serie A champions Juventus are understood to have tried to sign Chilean superstar as a successor of Alvaro Morata but failed with their attempts.

Now the Serie A giants Inter Milan are believed to test their luck and planning to make a big money offer for Copa America Winner who become a key player for the Gunners since making the £31.7m switch from Barcelona.

The Nerazzurri have seen their own star forward Mauro Icardi linked with a move away from San Siro, with the Gunners credited with an interest in the Argentine forward.

New Inter manager Frank de Boer has reportedly told the club that he needs offensive reinforcements for the 2016/17 season and asked them to splash €80million to lure Alexis Sanchez at Old Trafford.

The former Barcelona man’s future after he refused to sign a contract extension this term.

Copa America winner had a tough second season after suffering an injury midway through the campaign but still was the club’s one of the key players, and it’s unlikely that Wenger will sell him despite big money offer.

Report: Arsenal Make Offer For Juventus Midfielder

Wikimedia/Nazmi-Amin Tai

According to a report from the Daily Cannon, Arsenal has made a €16 million bid for 22 year old Juventus central midfielder Mario Lemina. Juventus reportedly turned down the offer, as they were looking for a higher bid.

The Mirror (via reports in Italy) then reported that Watford has made a better offer to Juventus worth €20 million, and Arsenal would have to make a similar offer in order to get Lemina.

Lemina had a good year last season splitting time between Juventus and Marseille. He made a combined 14 league appearances, scoring two goals, and posting a rating of over 7.00.

Lemina would likely be used in a backup role if he moved to Arsenal, but if he moved to Watford he would get the opportunity to see more consistent playing time.

Watford seem to want and need Lemina more desperately than Arsenal do, so it seems unlikely that the Gunners will be able to get the midfielder. However, they definitely have the budget to acquire him if they so desire.

True life story of a comic actor, Olaniyi Afonja (Sanyeri)

Nigerian comic actor, Sanyeri has opened up on his rough beginning as an actor as he did menial jobs in order to keep life going.

Olaniyi ‘Sanyeri’ Afonja

Olaniyi ‘Sanyeri’ Afonja is a household name in Nollywood. He has become one of the most known Yoruba actors with many films under his belt.

Sanyeri opened up in an interview about the challenges he faced before he finally made a name as an actor.

He said: “The suffering I endured was really extreme. After I finished my secondary school education, I did not have a job so I delved into the theatre world. I did it for some time but I was not being paid even when I went everywhere with the group and was helping them carry their costume.”

“I had to learn how to repair shoes so I became a shoe cobbler. Eventually, I left Oyo town and came to Lagos to find greener pastures but still I was not earning anything from acting.”

“I became a mobile cobbler. I would put my materials in a wooden box, place it on my shoulder and start hitting it as I walked the length and breadth of Idumota.”

“I would constantly hit my wooden box as I walked about to call the attention of people. Then nobody knew me so I kept hitting my box all over Idumota.”

“I remember I had a handkerchief I used to cover my face because of my tribal marks.”

“The reason I concealed my tribal marks was because the Igbo boys at Idumota had the belief that if they did not give their shoes to a Ghanaian cobbler, no one could do a better job.”

“If they saw my tribal marks, they would think I was one of the touts that would normally come to disturb them for money for shop and they would not give me their shoes to repair.”

“When I saw that being a shoe cobbler was affecting my career as an actor, I had to quit and face acting squarely. I thank God that good fortunes have come my way.”

Nollywood Veteran, Ogogo Ventures Into Farming As Piracy Frustrates Movie Practitioners

Popular Nollywood star, Ogogo has finally decided to venture into agriculture to keep body and soul together as the Nigerian pirates force him out of business.

Taiwo Hassan

Veteran Yoruba actor, Taiwo Hassan, also known as "Ogogo”, has revealed that the state of the movie industry has encouraged him to consider other source of income such as farming.

In an interview published by Punch News on Saturday, August 14, 2016, Ogogo observed that piracy has made it difficult for actors and movie producers to get value for their hard work. He also expressed that this is the reason for his long absence from Nollywood.

Hassan, 56, was once one of the most popular Yoruba actors in Nigeria but has decided to turn to another line of work for his livelihood.

"I just can’t be chasing some jobs that are not worth it now. Imagine going to Ibadan now on fuel of about N30, 000, the producers don’t usually have the fund to pay for my hotel and I will lodge my personal assistants in hotels as well.  I can’t commit to jobs that are not worth it. It is not every job that one gets to do at a certain stage in one’s life.

“No marketer can finance a movie project with a large amount of money.  Imagine releasing a movie in the morning by 9am and by 2pm the pirated copies will be out. So, how do we get our royalties or how does the marketer recoup his investment?

“We solely depend on God’s mercy now, and the goodwill of those who love us. Only few have small businesses of their own. As I speak, some actors are being fed by their wives. A big marketer in the industry told me when he wanted to release a Yoruba movie, some Igbo boys in Alaba told him to settle the pirates so they don’t pirate his movie. That is happening in a lawful society.”

Hassan observed that actors are the least paid when compared to professionals who play football or have a music career. Ogogo, as he is popularly known, still remains an actor but said he plans to go into farming, which was practiced by his parents.

"Footballers and musicians make more money than actors. Actors are the least paid.”

“My parents were farmers. I have partially started the process of going into farming.” he said.

Football Player Beats Referee Black and Blue After Being Shown Red Card (Photos)

In the game of football…When the referee shows a player a red card, he leaves the football field in disgrace…or pride, hits the showers and of course put to thinking about the mistake he just made. However, that was not the case in the Guatemalan third division where a match official was seriously beaten up during a game between Deportivo Chicacao and Obereños.

Division 3 player, Daniel Pedrosa, in a most unsportsman-like manner viciously beat up the referee after he received a red card.

Pedrosa mistakenly bumped into the referee near the halfway line while playing and the referee was far from pleased, immediately dishing out a red card to the midfielder.

The incensed player who felt hard done by, immediately headbutted and punched the referee with his fists before he was restrained by his fellow team mates.

Basketmouth Apologizes For Disrespecting Goodluck Jonathan.

Ace Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth, has withdrawn his statement on the current hardship of the country, apologizing to former president,Goodluck Jonathan for disrespecting him.

In his previous IG post, the comedian refuted rumors that he was one of the advocates for the emergence of Buhari’s administration.

He aired his stance on his alleged involvement in politics.

“Truth of the matter is that I would have voted anyone that could speak two words of English against Ex-president Goodluck Jonathan and that’s strictly based on the amount of greed and selfishness we witnessed from members of his (Jonathan’s) administration in the 6 years that he sat on the rock.

“I have said it numerous times that I am not a politician hence I try not to dabble in politics. However I think a few people interpret crying out against injustice by the one as campaign for the other.”

But not less than 24 hours after airing his stance, Basketmouth apologized for appearing as though ‘disrespectful’ to the former president.

He, however, retracted his statement, stating he has ‘nothing but respect’ for the former president.

He wrote:

“I have to sincerely apologise at this point that in expressing my opinion in my last post which was primarily to clear the air about who I campaigned, supported or rooted for or didn’t, I was disrespectful to a man I have nothing but respect.

“The last President may have had some wrong advisers and consequently decisions were made that will eventually impact on the economy, however I am sorry if it came across as an attack on the man Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

“We all desired a CHANGE, majority voted for it, now we have it, it is definitely a process, a tough one because I know the hustle is real…believe me, I know.

“I trust it can only get better, let’s just try to be patient,” he added.

Breaking: Arsenal free to land star striker, Premier League rivals pull plug

Slaven Bilic claims West Ham have ended their pursuit of Alexandre Lacazette who is also heavily linked with Arsenal for a potential summer move.

The 25-year-old striker is known to have been the subject of interest from the Hammers this summer.

They had a £31million bid rejected by Lyon earlier this summer and could yet return with an improved offer.

But Bilic insists Lacazette is no longer on his radar, although he did confirm the imminent arrival of Argentine hitman Jonathan Calleri.

The news will come as a boost to Arsenal, who continue to be touted with a big-money move to bring Lacazette to north London.

But with Lyon now reportedly valuing their star man at a massive £60m, a deal for the France international looks to be a long way off.

“100 per cent we will not go for Lacazette,” said Bilic.

“We will sign Calleri and he will be with us pretty soon depending on the work permit.

“He is a top striker and we have a good balance in the squad. We have a big couple of weeks in front of us with five big games.”

Lacazette has been inconsistent at times for Lyon, but an explosive end to the season has seen him confirm his status as a top striker.

The physicality of the Premier League wouldn’t be an issue for the Frenchman. But there are a few weaknesses to his game, including his consistency as he can go through a run of games struggling to influence the play.

He can also struggle aerially, but it would not have been an issue if Arsenal signed him, as they like to keep the floor on the deck.

Wenger is facing the possibility of having only one fit striker, Chuba Akpom, for his side’s opening fixture in the Premier League against Liverpool.

Supporters are crying out for the Frenchman to bring in support for Olivier Giroud – it remains to be seen if he gets any attacking deals over the line before the summer transfer window closes on August 31.

Arsenal make £43m bid to sign Premier League star – report

Arsenal have stepped up their interest in signing Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City, say reports

Arsenal have made a £43m bid to sign Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City this week, according to reports in France.

French newspaper L’Equipe is reporting that the north London side have been stepping up their interest in signing the PFA player of the year in recent days as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his squad ahead of the Premier League kick-off.

The same report claims that Mahrez would be open to a move to The Emirates if a fee can be agreed with Leicester.

The north London side have been linked with a host of Europe’s top players this summer but have thus far only signed Granit Xhaka, Takuma Asano and Rob Holding.

Leicester are likely to be desperate to keep hold of one of their star players after the Algeria international played such a pivotal role in helping them with the Premier League title last season.

Arsenal round-up: Initial talks begin over Lewandowski, Bony bid prepared

Arsenal begin the new Premier League season with a clash against Liverpool this weekend, but fans are still hoping for manager Arsene Wenger to splash the cash before the big kick-off.

Granit Xhaka remains the club’s biggest signing of the summer so far, while youngsters Rob Holding, Takuma Asano and Kelechi Nwakali have also arrived.

The transfer window is open for another three weeks, with supporters still hoping for few more additions especially in the striking department.

On that note, here is a round-up of the latest new surrounding the north London giants.

Henry speaks out over Arsenal's transfer activity

Arsenal’s search for a new striker will see them turn their attentions to world-class Bayern Munich No.9 Robert Lewandowksi, who scored 30 Bundesliga goals last season and has stalled on signing a new deal with the club. Initial talks have begun over a potential deal, but Wenger has earmarked Antoine Griezmann as an alternative. (The Sun)

The north London outfit remain interested in luring winger Riyad Mahrez away from Premier League champions Leicester City this summer, with a £35m bid reported. Furthermore, his agent supposedly had a meeting with the Foxes’ director of football John Rudkin.

Mesut Ozil, Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud have returned to training after being given an extended break for their exploits at this summer’s European Championships. The trio are unlikely to feature for the Gunners in their Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday.

Arsenal have not yet launched a bid for Mahrez, contrary to earlier reports. The winger scored 17 league goals in Leicester’s shock title-winning season. (Sky Sports)

Gooners celebrate on Twitter as target is on his way to Arsenal

Valencia’s star defender Schkodran Mustafi has fueled a potential transfer to Arsenal by ‘liking’ Granit Xhaka’s picture on Instagram and the Gonners started to celebrate on Twitter as if Arsenal have already completed the deal.

The Gunners, who are facing something of an injury crisis at the back at the moment, will be without both Per Mertesacker and Gabriel through injury while Laurent Koscielny is yet to reach match fitness after returning late from his Euro 2016 exploits.

Like Wenger, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is also after a new centre-back. Chelsea have been linked with Roma’s Kostas Manolas and Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli. But the Stamford Bridge side have hit a brick wall in their pursuits of the Serie A duo and they are now keeping an eye on the Valencia defender.

Mustafi, the German international who has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates, was on Wednesday left out of Valencia’s matchday squad ahead of a friendly with the Nigerian All-Stars.

As the current squad situations stand, it is looking likely that Wenger will need to draft in Calum Chambers and Rob Holding as the team’s first-choice defensive partnership to take on the Reds at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

However, with Mustafi being eyed as a key target for Arsene Wenger, the 24-year-old took to Twitter to ‘like’ new Granit Xhaka’s picture:

So far Arsenal have been rather conservative in the transfer market. Granit Xhaka was a big early buy, but only future prospects Takuma Asano and Rob Holding have arrived since.

And the German defender’s latest activity quite predictably sent Arsenal fans into complete meltdown on Twitter.

Mustafi already follows Xhaka and they have no relation to each other. Arsenal want him signed tomorrow

Arsenal star could sign for Real Madrid

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil is delaying on a new contract with the Emirates Stadium club because he wants to return to former side Real Madrid, according to Bild.

The crafty German playmaker became the Gunners’ record signing when he swapped the Santiago Bernabeu for North London and has been an integral player for Arsene Wenger’s men since.

Arsenal are believed to be trying to extend and improve Ozil’s deal with the club but as yet there has been no confirmation that the World Cup winner is set to commit, despite a number of false dawns in the media.

Ozil was well-liked at Madrid and a host of players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, reacted with bemusement at the former Werder Breman star’s sale.

Reports of a return to the Spanish capital have emerged in the European media sporadically and the latest suggests that Ozil feels like his work is not done with the famous La Liga side
